For my 30th birthday Matt took me to dinner in Paris. How does he top that for my 40th? By taking me to breakfast in Paris. In Las Vegas. Dinner for my 30th consisted of duck gizzards and escargot. Breakfast on my 40th, apple and caramel crêpes. There had to be some reward for turning 40.
It was a perfect day, catching up with wonderful friends who I’d known online for 7 years but never met, and walking around the wonder that is Vegas. The beauty of dragging two young children behind us was we were totally ignored by the those lovely people on the corners handing out cards to passer-bys. You know, the ones with pretty pictures of pretty people, whose clothes dissappeared when you rubbed them. I’m sure the kids would have had great fun with those.
We also visited M&Ms World, where I got to pose next to a giant yellow, slightly offputting piece of chocolate confectionary. Thankfully the real, bite sized pieces of yummy were a lot more inviting.
After a tour of the Neon Museum later that afternoon (which you really need to check out if you ever visit Las Vegas) we caught the fountains at Bellagio and the Pirate Battle at Treasure Island. This is where we were glad for young, naive children who simply saw it as a pirate show, and loved it.
But the highlight of the day, though I admit to very nearly chickening out, and having to down a shot of Las Vegas courage to commit to it, was crossing an item off my bucket list. The Riding a Mechanical Bull kind of item. To be honest I probably wouldn’t have been quite so scared if there weren’t so many people watching, but my saving grace was the line-dancing lesson that was being held in the same room which, apparently, was more intersting than me making a fool of myself. But I did it, and my kids were suitably impressed (if not disappointed they couldn’t have a go), and I could now admit to being 40. The big Four Oh.
What on earth is my poor husband going to do for my 50th?
