SUMMER | PHOTO A DAY | TWENTY NINE

Having gone down to bed well over an hour ago, the kids should be fast asleep by now. But they are as wired as I have ever seen then, and show no signs of going to sleep in a hurry. But so long as they leave me out here to do my thing it doesn’t really bother me. Being the only girl in the family I never had to share a room, but I am trying to imagine what it would have been like, and how the temptation would have been there to stay up giggling all night, while throwing pillows around the room, and jumping from one bed to the other (yes I can hear them, and I know exactly what they’re doing…).  And besides, I’m only going to wind myself up by going in there to tell them off, because they’ll be back at it a minute and a half after I leave the room. Might as well just let them wear themselves out and save myself the stress.

I suspect they’re a bit hyped because we headed into the city today to help Melbourne’s Vietnamese population celebrate New Year. There were so many new sights and smells for them to experience, and so many activities to take part in.  I spent my year’s allowance keeping them entertained and fed, and I guess I’m now paying the price. They just don’t want the day’s fun to end.
It was too hot and busy to have my camera out all day (besides me just wanting to enjoy it), but I did snap a few off while they were on the swings, and the giant tea-cups. I’m a bit bummed that I couldn’t manage to take a few shots of Jaedon and I hooning around in his first dodgem car experience, but his smile will remained etched within my memory for a very long time, as will his hysterical and uncontrollable laughter. That was definately my highlight of the day.

But my favourite photograph from the few I took was on the train ride home. Alicia-Rae absorbed in wrapping the balloon string around her hand so it wouldn’t float away, Jaedon intent on letting his go – and watching it bob back and forth along the roof as the welcome breezes pushed it to and fro. I just adore the look on my sweet boy’s face here, knowing that he gets such great pleasure from the simplest things. I could have saved myself a whole lot of money and just bought him a bunch of balloons to last the day.

And just a couple of them on the swings. I was very tempted to join them for a few minutes but, you know, somebody had to hold the camera…

The noise is finally petering out a few rooms over, and I feel myself heading the same way. It was a big day for all of us. And some of us now have to go soak their shiny red skin, and new layer of freckles in the shower. One day I’ll learn.
