SUMMER | PHOTO A DAY | FIFTEEN

I guess I *should* be posting a heap of birthday photos today.  You know, the whole unwrapping of presents, the blowing out of candles, the stuffing of face with cake, the playing with presents, the cuddles with Nana and Papa…..  but I didn’t really take that many.  I could say it was a conscious decision just to relax and enjoy the day without a camera stuck in front of my face, but it wasn’t at all.  It just happened that way.
We have a few dark, blurry, out of focus shots of Jaedon ripping into his gifts, with a smile that should have lit up the darkest of rooms. We also have a couple of images of them both helping Papa to put together his new Lego train set.  And a handful of him blowing out the five dinosaur candles, balanced on top of his green jelly cake.  I picked up the camera here and there and snapped off a few random shots, simply capturing the odd moment as they passed, just to make sure I’d remember what it was like the day my baby boy turned five.

I’m pretty sure that neither child consumed anything not made from sugar until dinner time.  And that was only with the promise of more jelly for dessert.  Just one spoon, mind you.  Breakfast was fruit loops (leftover from Christmas), and the trail to lunch was made up of sweets, chocolate biscuits, and leftover frosting. Lunch itself was Fairy Bread.  A child cannot have a birthday without fairy bread being involved, even if it’s just an excuse for mummy and daddy to eat some without feeling silly.  And I’m proud to say Alicia-Rae gets her Fairy Bread eating prowess from me.

To burn off all this sugar and food colouring we sent them out to the trampoline, which we’d sneakily filled with green balloons while the Lego train was being assembled.  Jaedon was delightfully suprised, which was super fun to see (and hear – he still manages to squeal like a girl when he’s excited…).  This was the one exception to me make not taking loads of images.  The kids had an absolute blast, and needless to say the balloons didn’t survive much more than 10 minutes.  My favourite shot of Jaedon was taken after he was too tired to bounce anymore.  He simply lay on the mat while I bounced him up and down myself.  Which worked to my advantage of course, as I could aim him right where I wanted him to be.

We had such delightfully fun day.  It felt like I would want it to feel if I were five and it was my birthday.

I hope Jaedon felt just how happy we are to have him in our lives, and how very proud of him we are.  And how grateful we are that he keeps us young, so we can still enjoy fairy bread and breathless bounces on the trampoline.  I’m sure we’ll pay for both tomorrow, but it will be entirely worth it.
