As I look at today’s photo of Jaedon, I think of summer. I remember all the things that summer used to mean to me, and how I thought I’d be young forever. That’s the only thing I really enjoy about the heat, the memories and emotions it conjures. For the most part I just want to sit on the couch and moan about how horrid it is. But when you have kids, and I’m sure my parents would have gone through the same thing, that really isn’t an option, no matter how much they like their tv. So you put on your brave face, try to muster some enthusiasm, and take them outside to play. And you take your camera with you so it at least feels like there’s a point to it, other than adding a few more layers of freckles.
And I’m so happy I captured this photograph of Alicia-Rae tonight. This is what this project is all about to me – capturing everyday moments, but moments that mean something and tell the story of who they are.
Alicia-Rae has never liked showers. Like ever. Well, not completely never or ever – she did, for some strange reason, love jumping in the hotel shower after a dip in the pool while we were on holidays in Cairns last year. Maybe because it was the most ginormous shower I’ve seen, and she could have been forgiven for not realising that she was in the shower at all. It just happened to be raining, in the bathroom.
But after a shudder worthy trip to the bathroom in McDonalds tonight (hey – it was too hot to cook) I insisted they have a bath when we got home, but Alicia-Rae opted for a shower instead. And the world stopped for a few short minutes. It was the most wonderful 10 minutes of my week so far. And I have the most bribe-worthy I’m getting this out at your 18th birthday party video you’ll ever see. I’ve never laughed so much in my life, not this week anyway, and I’ll never forget her serenading the bar of soap while practicing every dance move she’s ever learned. Like ever.
Thank you kids for such sweet moments and simple pleasures. This is what life is about.
