It was Sunday morning. Little Luke went down for his nap like any other day. He’d had his birthday a couple of days previous so had no reason to suspect this day was going to be any different. He had no idea that while his head lay on the pillow, and he dreamed of his mummy’s sweet coos and cuddles, and the strong arms and gentle voice of his daddy, and perhaps planning his next escape from the lounge into the back garden, when his mummy wasn’t looking, that his back garden was being taken over.
When his nap was done, and he cautiously joined the rest of us, he would have been very surprised to hear a bleating noise coming from the other side of the door. The one he’d planned to escape through. And every now and then another noise that sounded a bit like an oink. Then a quack. And a cluck-cluck or two. And where did all these balloons come from?
Just under a year ago I photographed little Luke as a newborn. It became one of my favourite sessions, as I loved the interaction I’d witnessed, and caught, between Luke and his mummy and daddy. They were both totally smitten with him, as they should have been – he was an absolutely divine little baby boy. And at one year of age not much had changed. He was still absolultely divine, and they were still smitten. More so.
His mummy had been planning his first birthday for a long time, making sure to book me in a good three months in advance. (I hope that I can be as organised as her when I grow up.) So I knew it was going to be a very special party. And it was. Not only had she called in the services of a mobile farm and petting zoo, Animals on the Move, but she’d spent an incredible amount of time behind the scenes, making sure this was a 1st birthday to remember. If she ever grows tired of her current job, I know there will be a long line of people chasing her for her event management skills. Not to mention her talents in the kitchen – having made all the amazing animal-themed treats herself. I was totally blown away. I hope my own children never find out that there are mothers like Melissa out there. 🙂
Thank you so much, Melissa and Shane for asking me to record this special event in your little boy’s life. We only get to turn one once in our lives, and whilst little Luke may not remember it personally, he’ll always have a reminder of it, and evidence of the your desire to fill his life with all the things a little boy could ever want. Make the most of the baby animals and biscuits, before too long it will be beer, pizza, and Playstation 46.
Look at this gorgeous little just woken up face.
I LOVE this one of Luke and his daddy
And these ones with his mummy
And check out these treats – Luke has one talented mummy. I think I might ask her to move in with us.
Oink oink
Isn’t this little guy such a darling. I could have packed him in my camera bag and taken him home
Mummy and Daddy would have missed him though, for sure. No doubt about that
For more of Luke’s incredibly special day, feel free to click here for a slideshow. It make take a few seconds to load. And be warned, if you’re looking at work and need to turn your speakers off , it has got some great music attached (by the incredibly talented, fun, and funky Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem – LOVE these guys!).
